Was heißt Partizipation also heute in einer neoliberalen, sich zunehmend faschisierenden Welt?
"A museum is nothing other than what you do with it, the forms in which people appropriate it. This is our contribution to a radically political redefinition of artistic relationally."
With these words Jorge Ribalta signalized the direction he would take in approaching art education at MACBA in Barcelona in 2004. The museum he describes must be ready to take risks: for it becomes part of the public sphere the moment social issues are negotiated within it. Since 2004, not only the discourse around the museum has changed, the world too has changed. The imperative of participation is troublesome: in many arenas, neoliberalism has replaced democratic calls for involvement with making more or less empty gestures at participation. Everyone is constantly hailed to participate - to join in a game where, in most cases, there is no chance to influence the rules. What does participation mean in this neoliberal and increasingly fascistic world today? Taking cues from two current positions, we revisit Ribalta's radical democratic take on the museum and art education and ask what current approaches to participation look like by looking into at in-between/spaces of unexpected encounters, partial positioning and new solidarities. Kinga German also developed a participatory space with her students for the Hungarian Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale entitled "Sustainable Identities" where she presents and reflects on possibilities for participation in curatorial projects that take participation into consideration in the conceptual phase. Renata Cervetto links curatorial questions, political agency and art education strategies in her practice as a curator and art educator based in Buenos Aires.
